If you’re starting a business or earning income outside of a regular job in Australia, you’ve probably heard the term ABN.
But what exactly is it? And do you actually need one?
What Is an ABN?
An ABN (Australian Business Number) is a unique 11-digit number issued by the Australian Business Register.
It identifies your business to the government, other businesses, and the wider community.
Think of your ABN as your business ID. It’s used when invoicing clients, registering for GST, dealing with suppliers, and interacting with the Australian Taxation Office.
Who Needs an ABN?
You generally need an ABN if you are:
Running a business
Whether you’re a sole trader, in a partnership, or operating through a company or trust, you’ll need an ABN to trade legally and professionally.
Working as a contractor or freelancer
If you’re invoicing for your services (instead of being paid wages as an employee), an ABN is usually required.
Starting a side hustle
Even if it’s part-time or not yet profitable, you may still need an ABN if your activities are considered a business rather than a hobby.
Registering for GST
If your business turnover is expected to reach $75,000 or more per year, you must register for GST – and you can’t do that without an ABN.
Who Might Not Need an ABN?
Not everyone earning extra income needs an ABN. For example:
- If you’re an employee, your employer handles tax and reporting obligations for you
- If your activity is a hobby (with no real intention to make a profit), an ABN may not be required
The distinction between a hobby and a business can be tricky, which is why it’s always worth getting professional advice.
Why Having an ABN Matters
Having an ABN isn’t just about compliance, it also makes running your business easier and more professional.
Without an ABN:
- Other businesses may withhold tax from payments to you
- You may have difficulty issuing invoices
- You can’t register for GST
With an ABN, you can operate with confidence, build credibility, and ensure you’re meeting your obligations from the start.
